Our Bonnie Bunny: The Gift from Hurricane Sandy

Image

Two weeks ago, I would have never imagined myself sitting at my kitchen table writing an update as a small, gentle rabbit weaves around in playful circles around my feet. But then again, two weeks ago, the entire northeast coast was laughing in disbelief at the sudden announcement of a “Frankenstorm” hurricane that was to (again) make Halloween nonexistent.

I was busy preparing for a conference for my job, and so the high levels of stress from work plus life in general left me really unprepared for the storm, despite its warnings. When it hit ground, I figured I would be fine since my boyfriend and I live inland of New Jersey, yet we ended up losing power anyway, and my whole life was thrown into loops for about a week and a half. We were carrying bags of stuff (clothes and personal groceries) around Staten Island and New Jersey, sleeping in small beds, wearing many layers, getting bits of cell service and updates on TV, the office closed. It was a mini vacation I did not want but mentally I knew I needed which led to a lot of couch-potato moments. (I realize my situation was less severe compared to those on the shoreline, in Staten Island and Rockaways, and I reminded myself this every day).

In the middle of the week, not being in my home was trying my patience. But something wonderful happened: my good friend Tara called, saying one of her employers was looking to find a new home for a rabbit. This rabbit had been living in Bradley Beach when the owner’s landlord came to check if the apartment was “storm ready.” They found the rabbit, and he was forced to give it up. They called her “George.”

This moment fell right into our laps. Steve and I had been debating since the storm of seeking out a shelter in hopes of adopting a displaced animal, preferably a rabbit.

And so, we immediately grasped this opportunity. It seemed too good to be true. And it was:

Image

We were able to pick her up in time to get electricity back to our apartment this past Friday (again, perfect timing. Fate, isn’t it?)  We renamed her Bonnie, and she is three years old. We’ve already bought her a new, gigantic pen, and have stored enough wonderful pellets and fresh greens (her favorites) to melt her tiny little heart. She has free reign of our gigantic living room, where she loves to hop and skip and make “binkys” (jumps for joy).

At this time, the bunny has ceased circles, and is stretched out in relaxation in the middle of my carpet. She’s surely made herself at home. She looks like a tiny, regal queen, at home on her throne.

Image

I cannot say that I ever dreamed of taking care of a rabbit. I had always found myself dreaming of one day taking care of a sweet, rescued dog which we could pour all our love upon. We are limited by our living space, and Steve insisted we find a rabbit who needed a home. After the hurricane, information trickled through television and the internet (when found) of impacting results from the storm’s devastation, from what happened in Seaside Heights to Breezy Point, Queens.  I heard about shelters filling up with displaced companion animals. The ASPCA has stated that they have rescued a minimum of 6,000 animals following the storm. The NJSPCA is filling up with found companion animals and are also looking for donations. Beyond donating clothes and food to collection drives for various groups, and donating to the Red Cross (which you can very conveniently do through Amazon.com), what else could be done?

It seemed something so small could help, like helping Bonnie, who came to us by complete and utter happenstance. Though I do think it was more than that.

Image

Bonnie has a beautiful personality. Besides her gorgeous gray splattered spot right on her nose, and her one pure white paw, she has such an expressive, explosive character. She’s smart and daring, playful and curious, but also sweetly affection and very warm towards us already (and we haven’t even had her a full week!).

I never realized I would love rabbits this much. I have a love for all animals but I think we tend to favor some as our favorites. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve learned that rabbits as companions (“pets”) is a relatively new fad from the 1980s, and like all domesticated animals, there is a commercial market for them. I would always recommend adopting a rabbit. I am unsure how she came about to her previous owner (who was a children’s magician!), but to us, she was a bunny in need of a home. They are self sufficient, in that they can be litter trained and groom themselves, but they also require a lot of knowledge and responsibility from their caretaker. Female rabbits like Bonnie should also be spayed because ovarian and uterus cancer are common in female rabbits, but being spayed cuts the risk severely. Rabbits are fragile, kind creatures. You know this from just holding them, when they allow you to – they are light like feathers, and feel like feathers. They hurt easily, both physically and mentally, and so its important to nurture them, as they nurture you.

They are also perfect for a vegan household! It’s wonderful to tell people that we are a nice little happy veg family. Bonnie loves to eat leafy green lettuce and kale, and some carrots, along with her usual pellets and hay. Do not feed them anything else, no matter how cute or tempting treats in the stores may seem to appear. Rabbits are also extremely curious and have a flexible mind – they love to be mentally stimulated and challenged! Watching her “binky” across the living room from the joy of skipping around curves and through small crevices makes my heart skip a beat. When she’s tired, she will lay by me or Steve, and let us gently pet her ears and back, while she stretches out in complete bliss. I highly recommend reading more from The House Rabbit Society, especially if you are now considering a rabbit. Often times people think rabbits are a low-maintenance “pet” when in fact they are the opposite.

So, what can I say? Events such as the hurricane tear people apart, illustrate moments of worst case scenarios come to life which both challenge the spirit and the heart. But as small bits of news here and there show, it also brings groups of people to the forefront of action, through groups such as Occupy Sandy, and the work of the ASPCA/Human Society, along with individual efforts to help bring things back to “normalcy,” whatever that may be. For us, it was this small gift that somehow, but quickly, came into our small home and made it a million suns brighter. I hope that for every sad or unfortunate event that has occurred in the last two weeks, each individual has had the chance to find their own small sun.

I’m now a mother!

Actually, not technically a mommy, but a sponsor to a beautiful turkey! For one year I opted to sponsor a turkey at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. I chose a turkey because the first time I met a rescued ” broiler ” turkey (its body being bred to be white and larger-than-normal), we really hit it off – they’re very beautiful creatures up close.  Today in the mail I received a card with the lucky turkey I’d be sponsoring, Beatrice!:

My baby!

Inside the card it reads:

Beatrice

Beatrice came from a commercial turkey farm, but was spared the usual fate when she was purchased live and given as a Thanksgiving gift to  a man on Staten Island, NY. Unable to care for this rapidly growing bird, he passed her to Carolyn, a local wildlife rehabber. In the two weeks that Carolyn cared for Beatrice, she followed her around everywhere and loved to be showered with attention. “It was like having another dog!” she said. Carolyn called WFAS in search of a loving home for Beatrice and we were thrilled that we had room for her here.

Since Beatrice arrived, staff and volunteers have been charmed by her friendly and affectionate nature. She loves to be around people and often sits to have her beautiful, white feathers strokes. After spending some time with Beatrice, one of our new volunteers proclaimed, “I’ll never eat turkey again. I’ll probably become vegan after this experience.” Welcome home Beatrice!

This weekend my boyfriend Steve and I will be visiting the sanctuary, and hopefully get to meet Beatrice! I’ll be sure to take lots of photos to share this weekend, and possibly cover the town of Woodstock.

You can find out how to help donate or sponsor an animal at WFAS here.

Ch-Ch-Changes (A New Beginning!)

With Cory the mini-horse at Safe Haven!

Whew, has it been quite a while!

I hope you didn’t miss me too much, world. Since my previous post, my life snowballed into a frenzy of busyness: weddings to attend, my final semester of school, a journalism capstone project, trips galore, and returning to my job, yet again!

But the biggest change in my life occurred in April. Working on my journalism thesis, I interviewed a professor at  CUNY who, along with his wife, runs the Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary, in Poughquag, New York. I met many of the sanctuary’s beautiful residents, including Duncan the goat, Emma the turkey, who I felt a real connection with, and Cory, the mini-horse. I have always been a supporter of animal sanctuaries, having given many donations to Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary in New York, but had never visited one. This opportunity led to a moment of clarity in my life, and reminded me of a lot of things that are, to me, personal ideals: caring for life, no matter how significant, with the level of respect you’d show your own family or loved ones. I saw a  lot of love at the Safe Haven farm that day.

After that visit, and a talk with a long time vegan, I found myself at a crossroads. I had been vegetarian for four years, and always said it was for ethical reasons. But here I was, baking with butter and eggs and milk. I decided I would stop using any animal products altogether, and since April, I have been slowly adjusting to being full of vegan. You can even read about my experience on Jersey City Vegan’s Vegan Like Me feature! (Emily’s blog is really fantastic, and I hope to be helping with some post in the distant future!)

So what does this mean for this tiny blog of mine?

I’m thinking of changing things up a bit here at Baboo Bakery (cue the Bowie song) – I want to document not only fun vegan recipes, but recipes that perhaps would help guide a new vegan like me (or vegetarian transitioning into vegan), events I’d intend, places I’d like to visit. This will most likely range in the New Jersey-New York area, but I’d also like to back-up to previous trips (such as my recent California coast trip in July). Finally, I’d like to try and go back and veganize my previous recipes, just as a challenge!

A recent vegan creation: Raspberry Zinger Cake!

I hope you will stick around to read as I share really wonderful things that mean a lot to me, but also wonderful things that will make you feel really good about yourself and the world as well!

So You Wanna Be a CakeSpy? Contest Entry

So one of my all time favorite blogs, CakeSpy, is having an amazing contest that I couldn’t pass up. Sweetness and cuteness combined? I’m IN! I took one of my all time favorite treats, cake balls, and enhanced them with some inspiration from CakeSpy’s book. My friends (my real life, non inanimate friends) and boyfriend tasted them and loved them!

So here is my entry. Introducing Agent Oink! (Click to see larger version)

Agent Oink is part of the CakeSpy detective agency, disguised as an oven timer inside the kitchen of Allyson Dwyer. His mission is to help make delicious and adorable desserts to report back to the CakeSpy Agency. To test his discoveries, he shares them at parties among his kitchen friends who help him to come up with new baking ideas. This week he is investigating how to make these vanilla-frosting-filled, white-chocolate-drenched, Funfetti cake balls bigger, more festive, and ultra delicious by stuffing them with fresh chocolate chip cookie dough, peanut butter cups, and chocolate caramels. What will his verdict be?!

Sky Blue Sky

Promise this will be my photo-laden post, but I also went a little crazy selecting photos for this trip.  I mean, come on, I was there for a month – of course the photos piled up. I took so many photos that my host father Patrizio would laugh every time I took out a camera.

But can you blame me? Just look for yourself:

I was there during my birthday. And I’m glad I was!

You know what that is. Best ever – aside from the ones I made with my host mom.

Summerteeth

Here’s a quick post of some desserts I had while on the cruise. While there was, of course, a massive buffet, I had more fun going to the dine-in restaurants. This is mostly because it’s just so much fun to order 3-4 desserts off a menu and not have to worry about pricing!

Outtamind (Outtasite)

WHEW! I have not updated in a long, long time! Please forgive me, I was actually very, very busy. Where did the summer go?

First! I had many finals, including a 20 page paper on Ulysses. Following this intense period, I went on a cruise with my boyfriend’s family! It was Norwegian Jewel – we sailed out of New York and traveled down to the Bahamas. It was my first time on a cruise & I enjoyed it a lot – very relaxing, and beautiful. Of course, there was also a butt-ton of food to be had. Like, sickeningly so.

I also got my old job back – and, of course, that took away more baking time from me!

Then, from June 30th to July 28th, I was in Italy, studying abroad. I stayed in the city of Verona with a host family. I had an incredible, gorgeous, relaxing and interesting time. I made a great friendship with my host parents – one that I know will last a long time, if not forever. I miss them a lot! But I am hoping to see them again someday. Overall, my time there was very moving and I took a lot back with me.

Anyway I plan to make a post today (maybe two) with photos of some things I ate and saw during my trips. But for now, here is a quick cake I put together for Steve’s parents, for their birthday:

It was a chocolate & banana cake, with peanut butter frosting.

Sadly I didn’t get such a nice photo of it. This was its final moments before consumption. RIP.

Recipe:

-Box of your favorite chocolate cake, or your favorite recipe

-3 overripe bananas

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, and grease two round cake pans. After you’ve prepared your batter, mash the three bananas, and then mix them in to the batter. Divide evenly, and bake for around 30-35 minutes.

Peanut butter frosting:

One cup unsalted butter

One cup of all natural peanut butter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 cup milk

4 cups of confectioners sugar

Mix together peanut butter with butter, then add 2 cups of confectioners sugar. Mix in milk & vanilla extract, and then add the final 2 cups of confectioners sugar (I liked to alternate between the wet and the sugar).

I then decorated with a chocolate glaze and peanut butter cups. Hope this holds you over until I get some real recipes up in here!

I’m Always In Love

So, here it begins! My very own little bakery. If you’re reading this, I want to thank you for being that close of a friend that you actually care to see what little creations I make.

If you’re new here, to my life, then welcome. I am so excited to meet you! : )

I think it’s time for a brief bio-introduction-type-dealy!

Name: Allyson. Marie. Dwyer Age 21. Birthday: July 2nd, 1989. Best birthday date ever? I say yes.

Here’s me!:

I’m from Leonardo, NJ, a small town near where the beginning of the Jersey shore starts – but nowhere near that Jersey Shore. However I’d say I currently live literally everywhere. I have an apartment in Bloomfield but go to school in New York City (at The New School~~~ so fancy), and spend a lot of time in Old Bridge, NJ, where Baboo #2 lives. I’m all over dat.

I’ll post a lot about the many bakeries I visit in the areas I spend the most time. Anything sweet, or very delicious, that I think is worth making a memory of!

But I don’t like to stay in one place – I’ll always post from my various adventures of the great things I find, so you may go out and find them, too.

I go to school for writing – I like to write plays! I’ve been writing plays since the end of middle school and have written & directed about four of my works, with one winning Best Production at the Bucks County Playhouse one year during a one-act competition. :  ) I’m working on a full length at the moment, so I may mention it from time to time!

Anyway, I’d say I have enjoyed baking since longlong ago – perhaps elementary school? I got way in to it in Middle School & would bake all sorts of weird treats which I continue to do up to this day. Basically I bake for all occasions but a lot of it is to reduce stress & to share my feelings with others.

With that in mind, how bout a little Q&A?!

Q: Allyson, what would you say is your favorite thing to bake??

A: Lately I’ve been really in to making vegan cookies from Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar. My favorite recipe in the book is the Carrot Raisin Spice Chewies. I can, and do, eat a million~~~ of these!

Otherwise, I am partial to all kinds of baking. Anything that lets me be creative and have fun!

Q: Vegan cookies?! Is this a completely vegan blog?

A: Sadly, no. I hate to disappoint any vegan readers than come across this blog, but I am not vegan. I am an insanely devout vegetarian, however. I hope to one day be vegan. I try very hard to be vegan when I can, but I have personal reasons for not being completely committed. However, you will be happy to know I will post several vegan & vegetarian dishes I enjoy making for myself!

Edit 01/12/11: For a long time now I have stopped eating anything with gelatin in it. I had posted a marshmallow recipe a while back but since then have learned more about the product and have decided to avoid it entirely. This will probably be the last time you see something which includes gelatin on this blog.

Q: What’s your favorite bakery?

A: I have two bakeries that I really, really love. The first is The Flaky Tart in Atlantic Highlands, NJ. CHECK IT OUT! This bakery rocks so hard, people. Best muffins, best scones, best cinnamon buns. Freshest baked goods ever and the kind I secretly use to judge all other bakeries I try! My second favorite is the Italian bakery Veniero’s, in the East Village. It’s a very old bakery, from 1894, that has a huge cafe inside for sitting down, with a beautiful, old interior. I have fond memories of this place, and I consider them to have some of the best cakes!

Q: What kind of flavors do you enjoy?

A: Lots! I am a fruit girl – I love banana, strawberry, orange, raspberry, blueberry, apple. Bananas, and peanut butter are a marriage to me! Anything which nuts, especially walnuts. Cinnamon is the best smell on the planet. I also have a not-so-secret love for baked goods involving cereal – ESPECIALLY fruity pebbles !

Q: You sure do love Wilco. What’s up with that?

A: I have no idea. People ask me this all the time. I think I just heard a song by them one day – “The Lonely 1” and fell INSTANTLY in love! You’ll soon realize all the titles are, in deed, Wilco songs. In fact, I got a tumblr that I sort of update from time to time. Whoops!

Q: Do you have any other blogs we need to know about?

My boyfriend and I have a blog dedicated to dumb & silly things see while thrifting, Thrift Fails. Thrifty is our second middle names – we go to yard sales on the weekends, flea markets, any Good Will that we can ravish. If you have any funny photos from your escapades, feel free to send them to us!

I also have a silly little personal tumblr, if you really want to get the nitty-gritty. I know you do!

Q: What on *EARTH* is a Baboo??

A: Personally, it’s a nonsense word I use with this kid:

But it’s also a word that revolves around love in general. Nonsensical love. Which is what this blog may very well be. : )

Q: Can you post another picture of Einstein?

A: I thought you’d never ask!!

Warmth,

Allyson
